5 Things To Know About Protecting Your Garage Floor From Winter Road Chemicals Damage
Winter is headed our way and so are plenty of problems with ice and snow on Alberta roads. One way that cities combat icy, slippery roads is de-icing materials - like the chemicals in road salt. There are numerous compounds used to to keep Alberta roads free of snow and ice and there are harmful ingredients in almost all of them - including your average, basic road salt.
One side effect of these chemicals is that they may be causing our concrete garage floors to deteriorate. You probably want to know just how to repair your salt-damaged concrete floor...and here at PE Coating Systems, we want to help you! So read on to learn five things about protecting garage floors from the chemicals used on icy roads.
1. Concrete damage - or spalling - is common during winter
Many things contribute to loss of integrity in your garage’s concrete flooring and it’s important to know what those things are so that you can fight against them. One way in which your concrete floor can be damaged is when the magnesium in different ice-melting chemicals comes in contact with concrete that has a high dolomite count.
Additionally, when there are cracks and pockets in the concrete of your garage floor, chemical-rich water can slide into those fissures and then expand as it freezes. This makes the concrete’s spalling worse and is not something you want to ignore for too long. If you want peace of mind about your concrete garage floor, contact us for a floor-coating estimate. (More on our methods in a bit!)
2. Your concrete can be exposed to harmful salt and chemical damage in all seasons
While winter is often the time of year when most people hear about the dangers of de-icing chemicals on their garage floors, the truth is that concrete floors are at risk the whole year. Yes, winter is a time when destructive chemicals are probably most present, but there are other potential problems as well. Gardening in the spring? Fertilizers can have a negative effect on your garage floor. Live in the ocean? Salt air and salt water can also be problems.
To fight the decay in your concrete garage floor, you’ll need to have it sealed off from harmful chemicals and other weakening influences. Don’t waste time - have it done as soon as possible!
3. The freeze/thaw cycle can also damage your concrete garage floor
When your garage floor is unsealed, not only are chemicals and salt allowed to wreak havoc on the concrete, but high/low temperatures also leave their mark. As the temperatures drop, salty, chemical-laden water freezes on and in your garage floor. This can cause cement flaking and breakage. Then, when the temperature rises, the saltwater pools, creating additional issues.
The best way to protect your concrete garage floor from being harmed is to have epoxy floor coating applied to the garage floor. At PE Coating Systems, our floor coatings are applied professionally and are your best bet for stopping water, salt, and chemical damage. You won’t have to worry about your floor cracking and splitting when we coat it for you.
4.Winterizing your garage can be a multi-step process
Now that we have discussed the dangers of leaving your concrete floor unprotected, it’s time to go deeper into what exactly you can do to make sure that your garage is ready for winter (and all other seasons as well). As mentioned above, the first (and best) thing you should do is have a team of professionals give your garage floor a protective coating.
